My 9-year-old Lab won't walk. Why is he refusing his evening walks?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 9 years old | 77 lbs

My 9 year old black Labrador has recently started to dislike going out for walks. He seems perfectly healthy and has a good appetite and behaves normally in the house. The first walk in the morning is fine but after that he either refuses to go out at all or is very reluctant. He has always been frightened of loud noises and bangs. Fireworks are a major problem but there haven't been any yet this year.

First I would have Harry checked by your veterinarian for arthritis. Many dogs are painful even if they do not show it or appear lame. The increased exercise may be making him sore. If his joints are fine and he is comfortable try taking him for a short walk in the morning and offer treats to get him up and going for a walk in the evening. Rewarding him when he walks later in the day, especially if he's hungry, will make him look forward to those walks. Also taking him somewhere he enjoys like a special park or hike may make him more interested. If you think it's due to anxiety then I recommend trying the supplement Solliquin. I've had excellent results with shy dogs, and those that are scared of thunderstorms too. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Harry.
