Dog chewed tire, black residue keeps coming back. Vet or just a stain?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 97 lbs

My dog got into a pile yesterday and was chewing on an old car tire. I took it from him but noticed black residue around his mouth. I cleaned it up but it seems to be coming back. is it a bad stain that will wear off eventually or does he need to go to the vet?

It could be that his fur is stained from the tire (which will go away as the hair grows out and falls off), but if you clean it away and it comes back, it may be that he has some of the residue inside of his mouth or that he is vomiting up the residue. I would watch Scout closing for signs of GI foreign body or obstruction, including poor appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, profound lethargy, etc. If you see any of these, he should be evaluated by a vet immediately.
