Why does my dog have hard, sensitive calluses on her paw pads?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | French Mastiff | Female | spayed | 5 years and 2 months old | 80 lbs

My French mastiff has round callus type sores on her feet and acts like they are sensitive to touch. They are the same color as pad, just harder in a round shaped area. I haven’t noticed them before but I haven’t cut he nails in awhile. Shes otherwise healthy, just occasional reflux. She did just get released from 6weeks in animal quarantine from moving to Hawaii last month and I thought I inspected her skin well, but don’t remember really checking out pads of her feet. Should I be worried?

I suspect that Nahla has developed these hard callouses (also called corns) from being in a kennel at the quarantine. They may go away with time - you can speed up the process by softening her pads - applying something like Vaseline or Aquafor to the areas daily and covering with dog boots (which you can buy from larger pet stores). If she is showing signs of lameness, you should take her to the vet for further care and pain relief medicine. Please do not use human pain relief medicine on her as they are often not safe, and can be toxic.
