My 3lb dog ate heartworm doxycycline. Is she okay? What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | unspayed | 1 year old | 3 lbs

One of my dogs is on Doxycyline for heartworms but my other dog who is healthy just ate one of the pills out of the other dogs bowl. Will she be ok? What do I do? She only weighs 3 lbs and does not have heartworms

Hello, sorry to hear about Zoey. It truly depends on the dose your dog got. If the weights are similar then Zoey may not experience any side effects. If the weights are different, then it truly does depend on what dose in mg/kg Zoey ingested. If you think this dose is high then you could expect to see vomiting, diarrhea and a decreased appetite. If you note any of these, then contact your veterinarian for an appointment as Zoey may need medications to control these side effects. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Doxycycline has a wide range of safety. However, it can cause gastrointestinal problems such as vomiting and or diarrhea that may need to be treated. Since she is so small if vomiting or diarrhea occur she should be seen right away to prevent dehydration. Best of luck to both dogs! Thank you for using Pet Coach.
