Why does my dog stop eating his food when I leave home? Is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Staffordshire Bull Terrier | Male | unneutered

My sister in laws staffy seems to go off his food when she leaves the house. He eats a small amount of it but then doesn't eat as much as he normally would. What could be causing this?

This can be a normal behavior for many dogs. It is a form of resource guarding. As long as Rocky resumes eating when your sister returns, it is not a concern. We suspect it is due to their concern that the primary caregiver may not return to feed them.
