Can I change my dog's canned food flavor without digestive issues?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 2 months and 15 days old | 9.3 lbs

I was wondering if we could change the flavors of our dogs canned food. Same brand just different flavor or can that cause her to have intestinal issues.

Most dogs will have no issues changing between flavors but a minority can be sensitive to certain ingredients/proteins/flavours and can develop vomiting, diarrhea or other sensitivities. If she has a history of dietary sensitivity, I would not recommend changing her again but for most dogs it should not cause any problem

Great question! Yes it can, especially if there is a big difference in the ingredients. Some companies minimize the number of different ingredients to prevent this problem from happening, so I would check the ingredients in each can. If there is a large number of different ingredients, you will likely see some GI upset.
