Kitten throwing up blood & diarrhea at 3 months. Should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | unspayed | 3 months and 22 days old | 2.3 lbs

My kitten is 3 months old, and just got her first shots this past week. Over the past few days, she has been throwing up and has diarrhea. She threw up what looks like a mixture of blood and saliva twice, and earlier today threw up what seemed to be all of the food that was in her stomach. She has been treated for worms twice, and the vet said that she got rid of all of them. I'm just worried, but don't have much time to take her into the vet, unless I need to.

Sorry to hear this. I'm sure this must be very frustrating and difficult to deal with. Unfortunately, I do recommend that Poppy goes back to the vet. Throwing up blood is very concerning, because this indicates that she is losing blood through her gastrointestinal tract, which can lead to anemia (low blood count). Kittens don't have much to lose, so it's imperative that she be evaluated and treated as soon as possible. I understand that it's difficult to keep taking Poppy back and forth to the vet. I also wouldn't have the time to do this during normal business hours. You may consider having her hospitalized until she gets better. You can ask your vet about this. Most vet clinics will offer for clients to drop their pet off and hospitalize them. This will be a bit more expensive, but may be worthwhile considering that she will likely need a few visits to the vet until the problem is completely taken care of. I hope that helps and Poppy gets better soon.
