Why is my 7-year-old pit mix suddenly barking all night long?

My 7 year old mix staf/pit has suddenly started barking all night long and won't sleep without the garden door open - which isn't great for home security. As we previously had lodgers, who couldn't be around dogs, he's never been a house dog. But has his own room (utility room). I previously was an owner who believed a big garden was sufficient exercise, but in the last two weeks I've been walking him for up to 6 miles a day. I’m sure this is very annoying. Since you’ve already tried increasing his exercise I would try confining him in a covered crate in a dark area. You can give Nixon something to chew on and have music playing so he can’t hear noises out in the yard. If he continues with the barking and anxiety then I’d talk with your veterinarian about prescription medication for anxiety.
