Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 8 years old | 30 lbs

My dog passed away last night. He was on treatment for tick fever with doxy for last 10 days as hes platelets were low and wbc as high as 30000. He developed edema in front legs and shoulders 4 days ago. Was it that doxy was not having any effect ? Coz hes anemia had worsened as seen in hes gums (white gums ). Yesterday when I visited other vet he suspecting cancer coz of such high wbc. I'm thinking bout autoimmune now & regretting I shud hav told vet to give steroids. What could be as per you?

I am sorry to hear about your loss and my thoughts are with you. Generalized edema could have been caused by a lack of albumin in blood due to albumin losing enteropathy from kidneys. This condition can be secondary to a kidney disease due to the infection disease (from ticks). I understand that the mechanism is not easy to understand but can lead to severe consequences. Anemia in Scooby case was not that severe and possibly another cause could have been present (as your veterinarian is suspecting). Unfortunately I do not think steroids could have helped much and modify clinical worsening.
