My 10-month Pitbull bled, no heat. Should I take her to the vet?

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Female | unspayed | 9 months and 20 days old | 50 lbs

I have a 10 month old pitbull and she hasnt gone into heat yet. About 2 weeks ago she bled all over my bed but by the next day there was no swelling or blood. There are male dogs in the house and they have not showed any interest in her. Should I take her to a vet? Or should I wait a bit longer?

It can take up to 12 months or longer for a large breed dog to go into heat for the first time, so Eos may not be mature enough yet. I am concerned that she bled all over your bed two weeks ago and I am curious as to what could cause it, but if it hasn't happened since, maybe she injured herself causing the bleeding. I would wait a bit longer to see if she goes into heat.

It is possible that your dog is in heat since she has not been spayed. If the signs do not resolve in the next couple of weeks, you should have her checked out by a veterinarian. In the meanwhile, you should probably keep her away from any intact male dogs.

My pitbull fog is 1.5 years old and is unspayed. She has bloody mucus coming out of her.
They are typically swollen and have a bloody discharge when they are in heat. This can last for about 3 weeks. If she has already been in heat then this is a sign there may be a uterine infection which will require treatment and possibly surgery.

I think my puppy started her period, it's not like a humans hers is more like little drops. Her middle part is like twice the size she's been laying down a lot and crying. Is this her period or should I take her to the vet? When she's in pain it scar
Hi and thanks for posting this morning. It sounds like Penelope is having her first estrus or 'heat' cycle. Dogs come into heat twice a year- once in the spring and once in the fall. Dogs do not have menstrual cycles like humans do- they are quite different. Small drops may be all you will notice-that is normal. Each estrus cycle lasts for about 4 weeks or so, the vaginal discharge she is experiencing may last for two weeks. No need to take her into your veterinarian unless you are still concerned, but it sounds like her estrus cycle has begun which is normal to start for smaller dog around 9 months-1 year of age. My 5 year old pitbull is "spotting" 2 months after her heat cycle. It has been once a week ish that just a tiny bit of awful smelling blood comes out. What should I do?
I'd have Iszadora seen by a vet immediately. This "spotting" could be due to a pyometra, which is an infection of the uterus that is fatal without treatment. Please take her into a vet now. If she does have a pyometra, she will need to be spayed. Best of luck.

Hi, my 8 year old staff has been on heat for 10 days the past two days she has been bleeding a lot more than usual. She is eating as normal, I'm constantly washing her and changing her bedding
The bleeding can be heavy at times, it occurs to prepare the womb for fertilised eggs. This means the old lining of the womb gets expelled in bits and pieces, which lays blood vessels open which therefore bleed. Eventually the womb will grow a new lining and the vessels will close. Once all this is done, you dog will be in estrus and able to conceive for up to three weeks after the bleeding stops. You may want to check Leah's gums once in a while. If they are pink, all is well, should they turn white, then she needs to be seen by a vet right away.

I would be suspicious there is another cause for the change in behavior. Swelling of the vulva happens early on in the heat cycle but everybody is different. With her age it’s possible she may not proceed quite as normal since she is young. It’s possible she does not feel well. It’s also possible she is starting to test her boundaries and where she fits in the pack hierarchy. Since she can’t talk and tell you, I recommend to have her examined by the veterinarian. If the veterinarian does not find any obvious source of pain, they may look into a bladder infection or anal gland infection as a cause for discomfort. It is always important to rule out medical causes. I hope this helps.

Why would my dog be going back in heat? It has been more than 21 days. Now she is bleeding again.
Most dogs typically go into heat twice a year. The questions to ask yourself are: 1. Has she ever done this before? 2. Does the blood look different? 3. Is she behaving differently? Occasionally, bitches do slow their bleeding and then start up again briefly towards the end, but it is not worth the risk to assume this is the case here. Pyometra is common in older, intact female dogs that have recently had a heat cycle. It is a very serious condition that typically requires surgical intervention. One of the external signs of heat in the dog is bleeding. You may also notice a very swollen vulva and frequent urination. If she is otherwise acting normally, it may be that this heat cycle is just late. But if she is unwell, not eating, lethargic or vomiting, then you need to get her seen by a veterinarian. As she is an older dog, she is at risk for a pyometra (infected uterus), and would need an emergency spay if that were the case. You may want to discuss getting her spayed with your regular vet, before it becomes an emergency situation.

Yes she should be starting her period soon. You know that a pet is having their period because you will see a very swollen vagina and sometimes a decrease in appetite. So this could explain what you are seeing. Look at Hina's genital area to see if it is indeed swollen. A pets period lasts anywhere from 2-4 weeks on average. And the decrease in appetite is normal during the first week of a pets menstrual cycle, but should improve gradually. If the blood is not coming from her genital area and is instead coming from her rectum, then its best to have her seen by your vet for further treatment. It could be that Gypsy is in heat, given that her last true one was in April. It would be the right time for her to go into heat again. The puppy may not be interested in her because he hasn't reached sexual maturity yet. It could also be a sign of a pyometra. This is when the uterus becomes infected, and this is life threatening. Leaving a pyometra untreated is fatal, so the best thing to do it take her into a vet right away. The vet can diagnose if she is experiencing a true heat or if she has a pyometra. If she does have a pyometra, spaying her is part of the recommended treatment. Good luck, I hope this helps!
