Why does my cat have black ear wax and seem drowsy and agitated?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 2 years and 2 months old | 9 lbs

My cat was in a bit of a scrap a couple of weeks ago, he had a small cut on his leg and on his cheek. He was taken to the vet who confirmed they weren’t infected but may scab and cause a small crater when the scabs came away, this has happened and I have cleaned them with what the vet gave me. There is a small amount of blood from the chin, and he now has a lot of black ear wax from the ear on the same side. He also seems to be acting a bit strange, drowsy and sleepy and just on edge.

Hi there! He may have an ear infection caused by yeast, bacteria, or even ear mites. This can causes itching and behavioral changes such as more lethargic or agitation as you say. He may also have picked up a few fleas which can cause itching around the neck, ears, as well as base of the tail. I would have Teddy examined by his veterinarian soon to rule out an ear infection or a flea allergy as the cause. An recheck exam wouldn't be a bad idea to be sure there is not another medical cause for the behavior. I hope this helps and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
