Why is my dog biting his tail and getting scabs? How can I help?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shiba Inu | Male | unneutered | 6 years and 11 months old | 27 lbs

My Shiba Inu has scabs near the back of his tail and he bites there a lot. He got a bath at Pet smart and he for sure doesn’t have fleas. Can his biting cause him to get these scabs around his tail area and what could I do to get them off besides picking his fur. He lets me pick them so it doesn’t hurt him. I just wonder if he could have a skin condition causing him to bite around his tale. And he doesn’t have it anywhere else just at the top of his tail.

I suspect these scans are caused from his biting and saliva irritating the skin. The first thing I would do would be have his anal glands checked as impacted anal glands is the biggest cause of dogs biting at their tail/ back end.
