My dog ate a bone and threw up pieces. Should I induce vomiting?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | unneutered | 9 months and 27 days old | 63 lbs

My dog (Cooper) a 9 month old golden retiever chewed up a cow knee cap. He grew up some chunks of bone from dime size to 1 1/4" x 1/2"pcs of hard bone. Should I give him something to have him throw up? Kevin

I would not recommend making Cooper vomit. IF he continues to vomit I would recommend taking him to the vet as soon as possible for a possible obstruction. I would monitor him closely for eating, drinking and defecation. If he is not defecation or having diarrhea I would recommend taking him to a vet. These large bones can cause a blockage or severe gastric upset. Hope that helps

Cooper may have some mild gastrointestinal upset due to the bone. As long as he is behaving normally otherwise, you can monitor him at home. Consider fasting him for 12-24 hours then feed a bland diet in small, frequent amounts until symptoms resolve. Transition slowly to his regular diet afterwards. Symptoms to watch for include lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite or abdominal pain. Any of these symptoms would warrant an exam with your veterinarian.
