Found a red, painful lump on my kitten's leg. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed

I have a kitten she's not very old about a year, I just found a lump near her right leg last night not sure if it's a hernia or not and it does seem to bother her a little but not a lot. The site of the bump looks like it's red maybe bruised on the actual skin below it. What should I do for her?

It looks painful and infectied. It may be a tumor or cyst or even an old wound that is an abscess and starting to open and drain. Clean with with warm soap and water then applly a warm compress to help the swelling. Make sure she stays confined so you can watch the area. If it ruptures and drains, it will actually be not as painful but just gently wipe the area if this happens. She does need to see a vet for antibiotics though.
