My cat has a recurring deep yellow lump. Could it be an abscess?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 8 years and 9 months old | 5 lbs

12 months ago cat had huge lump on side which disappeared then left massive open wound - it cleared up beautifully but now she had another one on her chest area about the size of a £2 coin which looks about 1/2 deep and yellow inside - what is it and what should we do? She is eating and drinking and toileting normally and doesn't appear to be in pain. There is no blood or oozing.

These each sound like an abscess that healed but trapped the bacteria under neath so it opened up and drained. The yellow inside may be fat or necrotic tissue. Clean it with soap and water on a cloth until you can take her to the vet. typically they heal very well and quickly but will need antibiotics to make sure the infection is gone while it is healing
