My dog scratched scab after microchip/skin tag removal, unsettled?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 8 years old | 10 lbs

On Wednesday, my dog got a skin tag removed from around his eye. At the same time, I got him microchipped. Yesterday (Saturday) I noticed he scratched the scab off and he started acting differently. He was unsettled. He kept stretching. I am not sure if the microchip is irritating him or if something else is wrong

Hi there! It is hard to say what exactly is causing the excessive scratching without examining him first, but it may be the microchip or perhaps the area around his eye may itch. Whenever tissue heals, it itches, and this could cause him to scratch and be unsettled. The needle they use to insert the microchip is quite large and will leave a hole in the skin that will scab over in a few days which can itch. Another cause may be a flea allergy or another allergy. If he continues to itch or appears to still be unsettled today and tomorrow, I would recommend another exam on Cupid to check for other causes of the itching. I hope this helps and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
