Pet's info: Dog | Cavalier King Charles Spaniel | Female | spayed | 7 years and 4 months old | 12 lbs
My 7 year old cavalier King Charles spaniel is having real trouble in the morning getting up. It’s as if she doesn’t want to put weight on her back legs, she’s not very stable and she seems like she’s in pain. Eventually she’s walking ok, but it takes her a while to get going. She’s recently been on antibiotics as our vet believed she had an infection in her knee joint. The antibiotics has been finished for a while but if anything she’s got worse. Have got videos of her I can send.

This breed is prone to luxating patellas which can cause knee joint laxity, pain and arthritis. I recommend X-rays of her back, hips and knees to see if there is a disc problem in her back, check her hip conformation and check her knees for patella luxation and arthritis. Then your veterinarian can prescribe pain medication if needed. You can also get a second opinion with a rehabilitation veterinarian who can give you rear leg strengthening exercises for her.
