My cat's ear has a dry, smelly clump. Should I clean it or see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Sphynx | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 9 months old | 8 lbs

My cat as like a dry clumpy thing right outside of his ear. He does have a foul odor when getting next to it and smelling it. Should I try cleaning it with something and then seeing if it goes away? The odor is a clear indication to something being wrong. Ive never taken him to a vet so I dont really know what to do.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. I would recommend having Olly examined by a veterinarian for further testing. What you are describing sounds like it could be an abscess that burst and the contents of the abscess have now dried on the fur. Your vet can examine this area and make the most appropriate recommendations. Olly may need a course of antibiotics and topical ointment. I would have the hair shaved from the area so it is easier to see what the problem is. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.
