My dog vomited, and it smells like chocolate. Is it an emergency?

My dog has been acting weird. hes been vomitting so we figured that maybe he ate something he wasnt supposed to. His vomit smells like chocolate. What do we do?

Poor Fluffy! If his vomit smells like chocolate, I would suspect that he has gotten into chocolate. Chocolate is toxic to dogs, and vomiting is a sign of that toxicity. There can be other more serious chocolate toxicity symptoms including heart failure, seizures, and death. I would take Fluffy into an emergency vet immediately for treatment. Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website. I hope this helps!

GI upset is a common symptom of chocolate ingestion and toxicity. In order to know if the dose of chocolate she received is toxic the type of choclate needs to be known (milk, dark, etc.). Some types contain more of the concerning toxin then others. Symptoms typically start 6 to 12 hours after ingestion so this timing is a bit delayed so the vomiting may also be unrelated. But, given the history, your pet should be seen by a veterinarian today to calculate the chocolate dose, investigate the vomiting, and get her feeling better. For a 10 pound dog, 85g of milk chocolate may cause mild symptoms of vomiting, diarrhea, increased heart rate, tremors, and increased urination. Since he is vomiting, I would recommend taking him to the vet to give him medication to calm his stomach and determine if he needs supportive care. I'm a bit worried that he could have eaten more chocolate then you realize based on how much he seems to be reacting to it. Going to the emergency clinic tonight would be ideal if possible. Otherwise, offer him small amounts of water and food once he stops vomiting, and take him to his regular vet first thing in the morning. Good luck!

Poor Eli! He sounds quite ill, based on your description. Since he is having pretty severe vomiting and diarrhea, it would really be best to take him to an emergency vet today - especially if he ate some chocolate, this may be a life-threatening problem that can't wait until tomorrow.

Chocolates toxicity is very serious. Vomiting and diarrhea are the first signs of toxicity but can quickly become heart issues, seizures, and even death depending on how much she consumed. QUESTION.... MY 9 MONTH OLD PUPPY ATE A 1 LB CONTAINER OF CHOCOLATE FROSTING SOMETIME TODAY OR POSSIBLY LAST EVENING SHE HAS VOMITED TWICE TODAY SINCE I HAVE BEEN HOME. SHOULD I BE WORRIED?
It's impossible how much chocolate was in the frosting without knowing a bit more about it - the brand, perhaps, and the variety (dark chocolate, milk chocolate, etc) but in general products like this don't tend to have a lot of actual chocolate in them. However, there is a considerable amount of fat in a pound of frosting and chocolate or not I would be worried that Emma could have a pretty bad case of dietary gastroenteritis (inflammation of the GI tract due to ingestion of difficult to digest foods) or even - more seriously - pancreatitis, which can be initiated by eating foods high in fats. As she's showing symptoms - the vomiting you mentioned - I would be worried about her, and I would take her in right now for some treatment. Bring the container of frosting with you so that the vet might be able to call ASPCA's poison control to understand the amount of chocolate ingested. If the chocolate isn't concerning Emma would probably benefit from from some fluids and anti-nausea drugs.

Dog has eaten chocolate
In order to know if Barney is in any danger we need know how much chocolate he ate, what kind (dark, milk, bakers?), and how long ago. Based on his picture, Barney is a very small dog, so if he ate more than 1.5oz of milk chocolate (and any amount of a darker chocolate) he needs to go to the vet to vomit. Give them your regular vet a call right away and see if he can go straight there or if they recommend he go to an emergency clinic. Good luck!

33 lb dog ate 1.5 oz of dark chocolate (88% cocoa content) last night. Within 2 hours, I gave him peroxide and he threw up what I believe to have been most everything in his stomach and it smelled heavily of chocolate. He appeared fine after throwing
Oh no, Spock! I'm glad that he vomited most, if not all, of the chocolate that he consumed because eating this amount of dark chocolate could cause elevations in heart rate and arrhythmias for a dog his size. In the future, take Spock to a vet to induce vomiting through injectable medications because hydrogen peroxide can cause significant irritation to the esophagus and stomach and is no longer recommended as a method of vomit induction. I do recommend taking Spock to the vet now for an exam and heart monitoring to assure that he has not developed arrhythmias. There is still the chance that he may experience vomiting and diarrhea or pancreatitis as a result of his chocolate ingestion. Start by offering him a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken and white rice a bit preventatively for the next few days before gradually transitioning him back to his normal diet. I hope that all goes well!

Oh no, it's not good that MJ ate an entire bag of Reese's cups! While one doesn't contain a lot of chocolate, an entire bag of them may be enough to cause chocolate toxicity, one sign of which is vomiting. Because of this and his currently symptoms, I would take him into a vet immediately for treatment. He needs decontamination procedures in case he is suffering from chocolate toxicity. There is also the potential that enough foils could cause a GI blockage, and that needs to be ruled in or out as well. Either take him into your normal vet or find an ER vet clinic or vet on call if your normal vet is closed. Best of luck!

Do you know how much chocolate did Whiskey have and how long ago ? This is very important to know ! How much did she vomit ? I can see from the pictures she is lying on her side, is she responding when you call her ? Is she willing to walk and just resting ? How much did she vomit ? There is a lot to consider ! I would suggest that you take her to see a vet. If you can't it might be better to ask one of us experts for a consultation because there is a lot to go through and that we can't answer in the forum. In general white and milk chocolate contain less of the active ingredients that are toxic to dogs, whilst dark chocolate is very toxic. Mild signs of toxicity involve vomiting and diarrhoea whilst higher doses of toxicity involve muscular contractions, anxiety, heart arrythmias, hypertension and can progress to seizures and coma,

I am sorry Chico is sick. Chocolate at high doses can cause sever gastric upset. I am concerned that the continued vomiting will cause dehydration and issues with kidney function. I would recommend taking Chico to the vet for medications to stop the vomiting and rehydrate him. Also I would start an over the counter anti acid to help calm down his stomach. You can try a bland diet of boiled chicken and white rice once his vomiting has stopped. I hope that helps and Chico feels better soon
