My dog has kennel cough and won't eat. What makes him dull and thin?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | West Highland White Terrier | Male | unneutered | 2 months old | 5.3 lbs

Hello. My dog Arlo has been diagnosed with kennel cough. He is recovering. However he is refusing to eat anything on his own. His usual diet consisted grounded pedigree with chicken broth or boiled egg and milk. Now he only has liquid food like milk. And am giving him ors. He looks dull and very thin. Can you please advise me what can I do to make him better?

Sometimes dogs with kennel cough, particularly with severe cases, do not want to eat because of the trouble they are having breathing. They need to concentrate on breathing rather than taking in food, and don't want to accidentally inhale anything. Sometimes the best way to combat this is with cough suppressants such as hydrocodone syrup, or something like Robitussin tablets. I don't typically associated dullness and being thin with kennel cough, so it is entirely possible that there could be something else going on entirely. If matters do not get better in the next day or two, I would take her back into the veterinarian for reassessment.
