Why is my dog's ear bleeding after cleaning post-hematoma surgery?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 8 years and 5 months old | 97 lbs

My dog had ear hematoma surgery on Wednesday. Our vet said we should clean his ears today. I put some stuff I bought at vet to clean ears in my dogs ear. He shook his ears and now his ear is bleeding again. I tried holding a wet paper towel on it to stop bleeding. It’s not coming out incredibly fast, just lots of drips.

Hi there and thanks for posting! Try holding pressure agains the area with a clean dry paper towel for 3 mins. You can also hold a little ice agains the area to help constrict the blood vessels. If it is still bleeding even after a couple tries and Riley is still bleeding where it is coming out very quickly or is too frequently to count, Riley may need to be taken to an emergency clinic to help stop the bleeding. I hope this helps and best of luck to you and Riley!
