My new stray kitten has yellow eye mucus and sneezes. Should I worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 4 lbs

We took in a stray kitten yesterday morning. She (we think It’s a girl) is of unknown age, but under 4 months. The vets nearby are all closed so we can’t get her in for a checkup until Monday. She’s not lethargic, eating and defecating a lot, very social. We had a kitten a year ago that had leukopenia and didn’t Make it, but we got rid of all of his things and we’ve had cats in the house since that never got sick. Kitten has a bit of yellow eye mucus and sneezes every few hours. Should we worry?

The panleukopenia virus can survive in the environment up to a year under optimal conditions. It is not uncommon for kittens to have "simple" upper respiratory infections though, which this may be. You can keep her in a cat carrier to restrict access to other parts of the house or you can have her examined at the nearest veterinary ER. As long as she is eating and behaving normally, she can likely wait until your vet is available. If she becomes lethargic, stops eating, develops GI upset or has an increase in the discharge, then have her seen sooner.
