Why is my cat's wound opening again after vet treatment and stitches?

Need advice about my cat she’s having on going help. We thought first area that’s stitched was a bite. Was an open wound. Took her to vet yesterday as she wasn’t right so gave her pain killer jaband antibiotics jab and tablets to take. Been missing all day. Has been back half hour. But more wound opening , would u think there is unlined problems or something someone doing this. I’m so worried. And haven’t lots of funds available to keep going thanks

Poor Lilly! If she was missing all day, she could have done something to cause the wound to open up more. When a cat has a wound and is on medication, it's best to keep her confined to allow her to heal correctly. I see she has stitches, and cats with stitches need to be kept quiet so the area can heal properly. I would keep her indoors while this wound is healing to prevent her from opening it up more, as well as disappearing and potentially missing times when she needs to take her medications. Set up a litter box inside for her along with food and water. Once the wound is fully healed and her stitches are removed, she can start going back outside. I hope this helps!

Unfortunately, at least 10 days with stitches on are required for complete healing. I recommend to bring your cat to the vet to replace the missing suture asap. In the meantime and after replacing the sutures, avoid licking or scratching by using a buster or a postoperative body (https://www.amazon.com/Kruuse-Buster-Body-Black-3X-Small/dp/B00Z0U6EH8). My 2.5yrs old cat has undergone ABC ON 15.5.18 she has stripped her stitches it bleeded a little but no more it os bleeding. But the skin is not set together. Should I restitch her wound? Or will it heal herself?
Without seeing a picture of Dory's incision, I cannot tell you for sure if it needs to be stitched again or not. I strongly advise you do not try to stitch it yourself! This will be very painful to her, stitching the incision requires sedatives that can only be administer by a vet. If she had the stitches on the 15th of this month, then the incision likely isn't healed as it takes at least 10-14 days for it to heal fully. I would take her back into her vet to have the incision examined and stitched closed again. Best of luck.

My cat recently had a wound at the base of his spine stitched 10 days ago. The stitches have now fell apart and there is a raw gaping wound, with slight seepage.
I am sorry to hear that TJ has this going on. I am worried that the wound is infected. Stitches often break down if there is an infection. I would highly encourage you to have a follow up appointment with your veterinarian as soon as possible. In the meantime you can use a warm water and Epsom salts compress to keep the area clean. Hello and welcome to Boop by Petco. I am sorry that Leo is having this issue. Cat bite abscesses are always left open to heal, because they need to be left open to drain. It is very important to keep Leo inside and also to keep the E-collar on, however these wounds need to be left open and take time to heal. If you stitch them up then it will cause the abscess to reform. Sometimes the wound gets so bad that it will need a surgical intervention and repair, however letting it heal by second intention (on it's own without surgery) is the first step and most often-times will heal like that. If pus is continuing to come out then re-visit with your vet as you might need more antibiotics. Best of luck with Leo.

My cat got a wound on her side a couple weeks ago. She finished her antibiotics and the wound seamed healed. Today a bit of it opened up and the skin around it is blue. Is this normal?
I am so sorry to hear that you are experiencing these issues with Waffles. Thank you for providing a picture of the wound. I would start by placing an e-collar on her straight away so she can't bite or lick the wound. This will cause further tissue trauma and may introduce infection. Cat bites are very likely to form an abcess. Which is an accumulation of Bacteria and dead and dying white blood cells. This forms puss and accumulates when wounds close over infection, under the skin, until it bursts. It sounds to me from what you are describing hay Waffles had an abscess which has not re-opened. Due this high likelihood for an abcess, as well as the fact that the would is currently open and bleeding, I would advise taking Waffles to the veterinarian soon. The vet will clean the wound by flushing it with saline. The vet may need to place a surgical drain in order to prevent pus building up and an abcess forming. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Gita. Six days is quite early to have her sutures removed. However, maybe it was suspected that she was having a reaction to the suture material or that they were contributing to the infection. It is possible for her wound to heal, but it will be more difficult without the sutures. She must be kept from licking the surgical site and her movements need to limited. No running, jumping or playing. I hope this information helps!

Hello doc I have two male cats. One of them developed a lesion above a forelimb and it is not healing even after antibiotic treatment and betadine application. Please guide.
That is a pretty large wound! That being said though, it looks like it is healing fine. It does not appear swollen or to have discharge coming from it. The tissue looks healthy. Having it stitched when it first happened which would have allowed it to heal faster. I am not sure how long it's been but a wound that size would take weeks to heal without stitches. If I were you I would keep applying a topical antibiotic cream and just leave it be. Stop using the Betadine. If he is licking it you must stop that behavior by using an Elizabethan collar (cone). As long as he keeps licking it will not heal. If you want it to heal faster you need to take him to a vet to have it stitched. Hope this helps. Best wishes!

This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). It may heal on its own, even though it will take few days. Disinfection may be done at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths twice daily. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking. If the wound will not heal/or at least improve in 5 days, a check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. If this is how her incision looked when you took her back in for the recheck, then your vet probably thinks that it will heal on its own - we call this second intention healing. This is a reasonable way to heal a wound that only affects the skin. If the vet thought that the wound extended deeper than just the skin, then Bonnie would need to have the sutures replaced. The down side of healing by second intention is that it takes much longer for the wound to heal - it could be several weeks of having her wear the e-collar. Because of this, often my clients will prefer that we go ahead and sedate and clean up the wound to place new sutures. Healing would then be expected in around 10 days.

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Boop by Petco! I agree, the abscess appears to be very open, which in a way is a good thing. This allows the wound to drain openly, so Lilly doesn’t get an accumulation of infected fluid under the skin (an abscess) again. I think the answer to your question about having her seen sooner depends on how the wound has changed since your veterinarian last saw it. Each veterinarian manages these wounds a little differently. If how it looks now is similar to how it looked at your last veterinary visit, and Lilly is otherwise acting healthy at home, she may not have to be evaluated sooner than her next appointment. If, however, the wound had changed dramatically (is more open, has a different colored fluid exuding from it, has a foul odor) then I recommend Lilly be seen sooner. The only bandage I would recommend would have to be placed by a veterinarian under light sedation, and this is called a “tie-over bandage”. These protect the wound from becoming i
