My kitten puked rope after spay surgery. Should I be worried?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 6 months and 14 days old

My female kitten was fixed and microchipped yesterday. This morning, I gave her food for the first time and she started puking soon after. Along with the food she puked up, she puked up what looks to be a small red coil of rope. I don't think I have anything like this in my house, so I'm worried she puked up something from the surgery, but I am not sure what. Should I be worried? She does not appear to be in distress.

I'm sorry Franziska isn't doing well! When a cat is spayed, there is no entry into the stomach or GI tract, so it would be impossible for this object to be something from her spay surgery. In addition, rope isn't used in a spay surgery. It sounds like you aren't sure if you have something like this in your home, so it is possibility that she could have eaten it at your house previously or maybe it was something she found outside if she is allowed outside. If she appears ok for now, I can give you a home remedy to try to see if that helps. I recommend withholding food for 8-12 hours, then feeding a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. I hope this helps!
