Why is my new kitten's bum red and swollen? Is it a boy or girl?

I just adopted a kitten today, when I was giving it a bath I noticed it had a very swollen and red bum, I can also feel a little pouch under but Im not sure if thats just a normal excess fat. Im not entirely sure if it's a boy or girl

Poor little Chico! He could be suffering from intestinal worms, which are common in kittens and could cause the red and swollen bump. I would have him seen by a vet for this, and bring along a sample of his feces as well. The vet can examine his feces under a microscope of signs of worms, and can treat him accordingly. The vet can also let you know if he is a boy or girl. I hope this helps!

Without seeing her anal area it is difficult to tell what is going on with her. If there is a redness/bulging around the rectal area it is possible she is experiencing what is called a rectal prolapse which can be seen in kittens who have diarrhea, often due to parasitism with worms or protzoal organisms. It is best to have the kitten examined to see if this is what is going on, or if there is another cause for what you are seeing. They can test the kitten for parasites and also help determine its age and whether or not it is ready to get vaccinations to prevent future illness.

why does my kitten have a bump on his butthole
Poor guy. The fact that he is so young, and the location of the bump, suggests that he may have unfortunately been bitten by an insect in this area. If he is not licking it excessively causing redness of the skin or seems bothered by it, I would leave it be for now and monitor it for the next few days to see if it starts to resolve on its own. If it seems irritating, then you can try applying a very small amount of Neosporin on the area and play with him for 15 mins to allow it time to absorb. Do not apply too much where he can lick it off and cause stomach upset. If it happens to not be improving after 4-7 days, then I would take him in to your vet to have him checked out so they can get a closer look at the area. Other possible causes is a foreign body with subsequent inflammation (granuloma) or an allergic skin reaction. Swelling of the anus/rectum could be due to constipation/hard stools, anal gland issues, allergies, irritation, or other problems. You would need to have the area looked at by your vet to determine what is going on and get the appropriate treatment. Be sure to let your vet known of any other issues you may have seen such as changes in appetite, energy levels, stool habits, etc. You can also use an Elizabethan (cone) collar to prevent your cat from licking/chewing at the affected area if it is bothersome until you can get to your vet.

Hello! That bump looks a little swollen and red, and it could simply be a wound. I would clean the area with warm water and antiseptic soap, and keep an eye on it. If the swelling gets larger, Chiky starts having trouble passing feces, she starts scooting on her behind, licking the area a lot, and/or you see pus, then I would take her into the vet. In that case, I would be concerned that the wound may be infected, or it could be something else causing the swelling such as infected and impacted anal sacs or intestinal worms. It sounds like he should go see the veterinarian. This symptoms could be caused by many things. Additionally, it may hurt him to have a bowel movement and then he might start going outside of the litter box. Best to get it taken care of early and quickly. I got my kitten today and his anus seems to be swollen. I’m not sure if I’m over reacting or it’s normal. He has loose stool and is meowing a bit but I think that’s for attention. He is quite skinny as well. No signs of bum scooting
Hello and welcome to Boop by Petco. The bum is a tiny bit swollen, and this could be due to diarrhea. Diarrhea could be due to worms, or food, or other problems. I recommend getting him a good dewormer as well as flea and tick prevention (fleas often carry worm eggs). Also, if Thanos is thin, I recommend a visit to the vet in the morning for a health check. Because Sombra hasn't had wet food before, it could be this causing her red and swollen anus. But it could also be due to something else like intestinal worms. Based on the picture, I think having her seen by a vet before you leave is the best idea. You don't want it to get worse while you are gone, so having her seen before you leave will give you peace of mind on your trip. Call the vet today to make an appointment. My cats bum and vagina is red and swollen and I’m not sure what from or how to help her
Poor Kya! There are a few things that could be going on. She could be having some issues such as constipation or a urinary issue which is causing irritation. You've also indicated that she is not spayed, so swelling of the vaginal region may also indicate that Kya is in heat. I would keep an eye on the area and remove and debris with a clean washcloth, and if the symptoms persist without visible signs of going into heat, or you see other symptoms of illness such as straining to go to the bathroom, blood in the urine or stool, strange discharge, lethargy, etc, schedule a vet visit to rule out more serious issues such as infections or GI problems.

Luckily it looks like her anus is just swollen and red causing it to protrude. I don't see any sign of a prolapse thankfully. Try and keep it clean and comfortable until you can get to the vet tomorrow.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Mindy. Yes, I recommend that she sees a veterinarian. Cats that have parasites frequently have more than one type. It is best to have her examined and a stool sample tested. Sometimes the anus can be res from straining to defecate. I hope this information helps!
