My neutered dog pees on other dogs. Is this normal marking behavior?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd - miniature | Male | neutered | 1 year and 5 months old | 17.63 lbs

Is it normal for my male mini Aussie to start peeing on other dogs? He's tried doing this to around 2-3 other male dogs that he's met. Should I be worried about his behavior or is this normal? FYI he has been neutered.

This can be either a dominance issue, or a submissive behavior, as he is still a young dog. You can use gentle correction at the first sign he may try to mark, but it is not an indication of anything serious. All dogs perceive their world just a bit differently from one another. Just like people. Work with him to discourage the behavior & try not to put him in the position where he needs to mark other dogs. He will hopefully outgrow the behavior.
