Why is my dog's eye swollen with hives, and Benadryl isn't working?

M boxers left eye suddenly swelled nd she has broke out in hives all over, I gave two benadryl but it seeems to be getting worse,

I would take Molly into a vet immediately, it sounds like she is having a severe allergic reaction. The problem with allergic reactions is that they can cause the muzzle and face to swell, leading to difficulty breathing and respiratory distress. You have done all you can at home with the benadryl and since it's not working, she now needs stronger drugs from the vet to control the reaction. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. Those look like hives on Molly. Giving her a Benedryl was the right thing to do. She's probably having an allergic reaction to something. Sometimes Benedryl is not enough and the dog needs steroid injections or pills to help get over the reaction. If she's acting comfortable and calm you're probably OK, but if she is painting excessively or seems very lethargic I would recommend taking her to the vet immediately to get treatment for an allergic reaction. Also other things to watch out for is any vomiting or diarrhea. This can indicate a severe reaction as well.

She came down with hives all over her body, gave her Benadryl it didn't help. She is slow moving, her eyes are somewhat swollen and her nose is luke warm, she is not having any breathing issues, but she acts like she doesn't feel good, please help.

In some cases allergic reactions need stronger medications such as steroids, and that is likely in this case since the Benadryl didn't help. They can continue to progress to breathing difficulties. so it's best to stop it for now. I would take her into an vet right away to get her treated for her reaction. I would have Lexi seen by a vet immediately if the Benadryl isn't working. The concern with facial swelling is that it could prevent her from breathing, leading to respiratory distress. She may need a stronger drug such as a steroid to stop the reaction. I would have her seen by an ER vet or find a vet on call to see her ASAP.

This is probably due to an allergy, although it could also be infection or mites. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat with a high quality flea treatment (advocate or advantage), then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). Hives are usually treated with an anti-histamine, like Benadryl, and if that doesn't help then an injection of a corticosteroid may be needed. If you gave her an anti-histamine and it is not working then she may need to visit a vet for more treatment.

This is probably an allergic reaction due to an insect bite or a plant outside. those reactions tend to resolve within 48 hours without treatment. if the swelling becomes too large or if your dog is lethargic, take her to the vet in order to get an antihistamine or steroid injection.

It looks like allergic reaction. Milo could have been bitten or stung by an insect, it might be reaction to plants or pollen but it is less likely. If Benadryl hasn't helped, you need to take your dog to your local vets to get more potent anti-allergic medication by infection.

Got home from work and my dogs muzzle/nose was swollen. I don’t know if something bit her or something. Gave her half of a half of Benadryl. Is there anything else I can buy for her? She’s a dachshound mix.
Oh my goodness, poor pup! This is quite swollen. Unfortunately Benadryl is really the only over the counter medication we may use for allergic reaction such as this (at least that is what we would suspect with this appearance). If the swelling doesn't start to go down with the Benadryl, if she had trouble breathing or starts vomiting then I would recommend taking her to the emergency vet. These pets often also need a steroid to get this reaction under control. It also sounds like perhaps she could have a larger dose of benadryl but you will need to check her weight and the number of milligrams (mg) she has already received. If the Benadryl was effective, I would have expected to see a reduction in the swelling by now. Sometimes allergic reactions require stronger drugs to treat such a steroids, and it sounds like this may be the cause for Moose. Because the swelling hasn't reduced and the reaction appears to be progressing, it's time to see a vet immediately.
