How to soothe my senior schnauzer's itchy, dry skin and fur loss?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Schnauzer | Male | unneutered

My miniature schnauzer delaney is 10 years old. Unfortunately he’s always suffered with really bad skin. He has lost almost all of his fur and had black and pink dry skin in places he is constantly biting and itching and I was wondering if ther is anything I can purchase to help soothe his skin, he does not have insurance.

You can add an essential fatty acid supplement, such as DermCaps or EicosaCaps, to his diet. EFAs may promote healthy skin and coat and could decrease any itching or inflammation. An e-collar (cone) ca be used to prevent excessive licking or chewing. Delaney should be examined by your veterinarian to diagnose parasites (fleas or mites), allergies, infection (bacterial or fungal) and to have blood drawn to submit for thyroid testing. Hypothyroidism can result in hair loss and other skin conditions.
