My dog gulps water and then throws it up. Is this a serious problem?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labradoodle | Male | neutered | 4 years and 1 month old | 35 lbs

Teddy has regurgitated his water twice in the past 3 months right after his first morning potty break. We’ll bring him back inside and he gulps his water and nibbles of some kibble then few minutes later he ends up regurgitating it. He doesn’t always gulp his water but the two times he’s regurgitated it, he’d gulp down the water until his bowl was empty. Any ideas if this is a serious problem?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If it only happens when he drinks that quickly and is eating and not regurgitating or vomiting any other time then I would think he is ok. If that is not the case then I would have him examined by your Vet and have X-rays done to check his esophagus. I would prevent him from drinking so much so quickly. Only allow small amounts a time until his thirst is relieved. I hope this helps and I wish Teddy the best!

I am so sorry this is happening to Gibby. I am sure it is very upsetting for you. It is possible he is simply drinking too much too fast, and I would try limiting how much he can have in one go. Or perhaps try using a water bottle dispenser which limits how much he can intake at once. It is also possible that there is a medical or structural cause of the issue and I would agree it is worth taking him back to the veterinarian for a re-examination to be on the safe side. I hope this was helpful and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
