My dog is chewing slow and has sores in his mouth. Is it urgent?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Havanese | Male | neutered | 11 years and 3 months old | 20 lbs

My dog has been eating, but it's obvious something is bothering him, he is chewing slower and more deliberate, His gums look fine, but I did see some sores (pale colored spots) on the inside of his cheeks. What would cause this? I do have a vet appointment scheduled for Monday, but wonder if I need to take him to the Emergency Animal Hospital.

Marley has quite significant tartar on his teeth, and there is inflammation of the immediate gums. The white plaques you can see look like ulcers caused by the tartar rubbing on the gums. He will likely need some pain relief and antibiotics, but ultimately he will need the teeth cleaned. I don't think you need to rush him to the vet tonight, but I would try and get him in tomorrow as he could do with some pain relief.
