Why are my dog's feet and face rust-stained and making her itchy?

This rusty stain can be due to excessively licking and excess salivation. This excessive licking can be a sign of itchiness, and you have said Misty is itchy. This could be due to allergies, licking the paws a lot is a typical sign of allergies. I would have her seen by a vet first thing the morning. The vet can diagnose what is causing her symptoms and can prescribe medication to treat it. I hope this helps!

This is probably due to a severe allergy, although it could also be yeast, fleas or mites. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat her with a high quality flea treatment (e.g. advantage), then get Lilli Belle to the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try discovering the cause of the allergy. Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair the skin lesions (steroids and antibiotics, anti fungals). simultaneously you should start her on a prescription hypoallergenic diet for at least 2 months. Hopefully you will see some results after all this, if not you and your vet should consider putting her on a long term allergy treatment (Atopica or Apoquel).

The most common cause for hair turning a rust color is from licking. Licking the feet is commonly caused by food allergies or atopy, though other possible causes include flea allergies and environmental allergies. The excessive licking can set up the skin for a yeast infection, which makes the licking worse and the cycle continues. You can try a medicated shampoo that works against yeast/fungus and having August wear an e-collar so he cannot continue to lick his paws. Once you get to the vet, they can further pinpoint the cause and treatment options so he can get more comfortable.

This is a very typical response to itchy feet, and the discoloration comes from opportunistic yeast that love to grow in damp environments. Very often this type of behavior is a result of allergies- environmental or food. I would recommend consulting your veterinarian as allergies can be complicated to navigate. Often, the first thing to be done is a food elimination diet for 8 weeks. This involves a strict regime of a novel protein, restricted ingredient food. Often a great place to start.

Rusty will be laying down and just licking and gnawing at his paws for minutes at a time. Is this normal?
Hello. This may be an indication that Rusty has allergies. Sometimes all the symptoms you see are licking the paws. He may also have some nail bed disease, or he just may be a fastidious groomer. If he is not causing any sores on his feet, or loss of hair, or you are not particularly bothered by the behavior ( he does not keep you up at night licking his feet ), then a couple of minutes of grooming the feet just may be his own particular trait. I'm sorry to hear that your dogs have itching feet. It is typically due to an allergy like you mentioned. Dogs are out walking through the grass so their paws and underside (chest and belly) are most commonly affected. Rarely dog can have compulsive disorders that result in repetitive licking. If it is an allergy, a lot of the time the hair between the toes and under the paw is brown from salivary staining. The skin can look red and swollen as well. I would start by bathing the paws with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. Then make sure to wipe the paws off with a damp rag each time the dogs come in from outside. This will help to remove any potential allergens. Next you need to keep them from licking by wearing an E-collar (cone). If this doesn't break the cycle of licking they will need to see their veterinarian for medications and a more long-term solution. I hope this information helps!

Hi, I have a 13 year old west highland terrier that has a brownish fur discoloration on his paws and mouth
That discoloration is a porphyrin staining. Dogs have this stain in their saliva normally. Curly is obviously licking his paws most likely due to an underlying allergy. Seasonal and non-seasonal environmental and food allergies can cause a pet to lick or chew on the feet, knees, or other body parts. Inflammation can also be caused by items embedded in the skin, painful joints, flea bites, etc. The staining around the mouth is most likely due to a dental infection. More saliva is produced in attempt to rid the bacteria from being absorbed through the gums into the bloodstream. Scabies is VERY itchy, in both pets and the humans that it can also affect. I suspect that Trisha is having issues with allergies at this time. The brown staining around her ears is often caused by a yeast infection, which is usually from allergy inflammation. The brown staining around her vulva can be caused by excessive licking (because of itch), UTI, yeast infection, among a few other things. With a history of severe FAD, she should be on a monthly flea preventative, even if you aren't seeing fleas, since it only takes 1 flea bite to cause a flare-up of total-body itching. The most common cause of itching feet and ears is food allergies, so it is a good idea to discuss a food trial or a prescription hypoallergenic dog food with your vet, in addition to medications to help with the itching in the short term. The change of color could be as a result of constant licking. This could be due to an allergy, fleas, an infection or mites. If it's been a while already it is recommended to have it checked by a vet in order to rule out parasites first, then a treatment for allergy or infection can be started.

It looks as if your dog has been chewing her paws excessively. This could be due to something that is stuck in the toes, something that caused an irritation like an insect bite or sting, or most commonly an allergy. Dogs can have allergies to things in the environment like dust, pollen, and grass, etc. They inhale allergies and it makes their skin very itchy, breaks down the body’s natural skin barrier, and causes infection. Your dog needs a medication to help block the itch sensation and may need an antibiotic to help with infection. Some of the best medications for this include a drug called Cytopoint, which is an injection, and Apoquel, which is a pill she could take daily. I would encourage you to find another vet and talk to them about the possibilities of an allergy in your dog and inquire about these drugs. We took Nutella to the park and she ran on the hard (not hot) asphalt. In between two of her paws her skin is red and she keeps licking them. I cannot get her to stop. Any suggestions?
She could have allergies or an infection. You could soak her paw in a warm Epsom salt solution and see if that helps. Otherwise, she should be examined by your vet. She may need an antibiotic, anti-histamine, and/or a corticosteroid to treat.
