My dog has bloody diarrhea and won't eat. What can I do at home?

My dog is not eating and is pooping a bit watery and slight bloody. I cannot get him to a vet because of flooding. What can I do from home to help him?

Poor Max! And I'm sorry that you are stuck due to flooding. Be sure he drinks plenty of water (it's very important he stays hydrated), and rest him as much as possible. You can offer him a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day. If he refuses to eat that and continues to poop watery and bloody feces, I would get him into the vet as soon as you can. I hope this helps!

You'll want to isolate Alex and keep him away from any other pets. Be sure t offer plenty of fresh drinking water and offer a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice. Be sure to give your doctor call. If you have a close relationship with the office, you may be able to drop off a stool sample. They'll check for any intestinal parasites and bacterial overgrowth.

Poor Buddy! Diarrhea can be caused by a variety of conditions, including parasites, viruses, "garbage gut" from eating different foods or treats, among many others. Buddy may be having a bit of blood in his stool from irritation to the colon or parasites. Since you can't take him to the vet today and he is otherwise eating and drinking normally, try withholding food for the next 12-24 hours. After that time, offer boiled white meat chicken and white rice (1 cup of the 50:50 mixture for every 10 pounds of body weight, divided into 2-4 smaller meals) for the next few days. After several days on this bland diet, gradually mix in his normal dog food over another 5-7 days. However, if his diarrhea continues or worsens, if he becomes lethargic, stops eating and drinking, or has more blood in his stool, Buddy will need to go to his vet for further evaluation. I can give you a home remedy for Diesel to see if that helps. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If he is acting normal then you can withhold food for 12 hours and then offer him a small amount of a bland diet, like boiled chicken and white rice, and see how he does with that. You could also add a probiotic to his food. If the diarrhea continues, he starts vomiting, and/or becomes lethargic then he needs to be examined by a vet for treatment. He could have an infection, parasite, colitis, HGE, etc. and your vet can run lab-work to help diagnose and treat. Hope he feels better soon!

After 2 days, you can put him back gradually on his normal food. If the diarrhea does not resolve, if the blood increases or if he tops eating, take him to the vet to get treatment as it might be a serious infection.

Poor guy. It sounds like you should go to another vet for a second opinion here. Something is definitely causing your pets inappetence and GI symptoms. Some things to consider as causes would be addison's disease and pancreatitis. I would recommend going back to the vet to have bloodwork analysis and a urinalysis to start. They may also want to do radiographs as well. In the meantime it is best to offer small portion meals of boiled plain chicken or lean ground turkey and white rice with some pedialyte (non-flavored) diluted 50:50 with water to help replace some of the electrolyte losses. Please take Max to the veterinarian. Let them know your financial restrictions but this could be something easily treatable such as parasites or gastritis.
