My dog has a cold. Can he get it from humans or dogs at the groomer?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bichon Frise | Male | neutered | 9 months and 26 days old | 12 lbs

My dog has a cold but the only thing he has right now is a fever. We took him to the vet this morning and he gave him some medicine for the fever. My mother is sick, could our dog have gotten it from her? He was also at the groomers Tuesday could he have gotten sick from one of the other dogs there?

It is very unlikely he has gotten sick from your mother as there is no crossover between human and dog respiratory viruses. It is possible he has picked it up at the groomer's, as the doggy cold virus, essentially kennel cough can linger in the environment.
