Why is my dog licking rust? Is it harmful or an iron deficiency?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 3 years and 2 months old | 50 lbs

My dog seems to enjoy licking the rust on the chains of my porch swing. Is this bad for him? Does he possibly have an iron deficiency he's trying to correct? Or does he just like the taste of rust?

As along as Bo isn't displaying any clinical signs, such as excess thirst or urination, vomiting or dirrhoea I would not be concerned at this stage. However, in the long run it is not a good idea for him to lick the rust and I would advise covering it with a plastic cover or duct tape to stop him. It is more likely due to boredom and a like of the taste then an iron deficiency.
