Why is my feral mom cat suddenly aggressive when I approach with food?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Balinese | Female | unspayed | 7 lbs

I've been feeding a feral mom cat for awhile now. In the past, She would normally hiss a little when i approach her with food, but calm down and then eat when I am gone. For the past few days whenever she hears me opining the door she would run to me and start hissing and jumping at me. she has gotten very aggressive. But, after being fed she would let my daughter get close to her and her kitten without hissing, as long as she's not carrying any food or water. what's wrong with the cat?

Sometimes they become more territorial over the food as they get older or as their kittens get older. Or she could not feel well. Usually they will be lethargic or not want to eat though so this is less likely. With them being feral there isn't a lot you can do. Please be careful feeding them as I do not want you or your daughter to get bit. You may start putting the food in a place where you can place it and the cat not be able to reach you until after you put it down. Also when she or her kittens are eating I would not touch or mess with them as this can make food aggression worse. I hope this helps!
