Why is my young dog limping and hopping on three legs sometimes?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered

My dog is almost a year old and seems to have trouble walking sometimes. He'll just walk slowly and careful. This time I noticed he was having trouble getting up, when he did he wouldn't walk on his front leg and was kinda hopping on his back legs. He doesn't seem like he's in pain. And I felt his legs and don't see anything wrong. And sometimes he walks just fine. What could it be?

The most common reasons for young dogs to have issues with mobility include congenital bony abnormalities, juvenile onset arthritis, or a traumatic injury. If this is a relatively chronic issue, I would definitely recommend a physical exam by your veterinarian to see if a specific problem can be identified. Depending on the vet's findings, x-rays might be advisable to further investigate the matter. Snowy's breed and size will likely play into the likelihood of one condition over another. Hope this helps!
