Why is my cat's fur loss, sores, and redness getting worse?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Manx | Female | spayed | 10 years old | 13 lbs

My cat has had skin problems (fur loss, sores and redness on bald spots) for about a year. We thought it was an anxiety overgrooming problem and she's been on fluoxetine for two months, it's still getting worse. We cut out dairy, grains, and chicken products in case of allergies. We switched to an unscented litter. We moved houses. Switched laundry detergents. I switched lotions and stopped wearing perfume. It's still getting worse. Any ideas?

Hi. It sounds like you doing a great job. Allergies, food sensitivity, or external parasites are all possible. If it's not improving and you're frustrated, I would recommend seeing a dermatology specialist. In meantime, try oatmeal bathe, and try another protein source ( venison, fish, duck, etc).
