My dog won't play with toys. How can I get him interested in playing?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Male | neutered | 8 lbs

I just got my dog (3 weeks), he is 3 years old. He doesn't seem to like ANY toy, I feel sorry for him because he doesn't play, I tried to play with the toy and seem happy with it so he could see how much fun it is and be interested but it didn't work. Anyone has any tips on how to get him to be interested and have fun?

Many dogs never play with toys. Try some puzzle toys or a treat ball. He'll be rewarded when he figures out how to get the hidden treat. Sometimes playing with a ball or stick in the yard will get them interested. If Ollie isn't a toy dog, he may get more fun out of going for walks with you or learning cute dog tricks. Find an activity that you can enjoy together and he'll be happy spending time with you. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Ollie.
