Hello Doc, My dog is on doxy and is under treatment for tick fever. After 3 days on doxy he started showing some improvent but suddenly hes front leg started to swell and is gone upto chest. It's soft liquid filled under chest skin. As due to tick fever hes platelets are low 57000. Can I use lasix (furosemide) tab to bring down the swelling and drain that excess liquid ? Is there chances for him to collapse if I use 20mg lasix ? Plz help as my vet is out of station..Thanks in advance

Hi and thank you for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Gosh, I am sorry to hear this with Scooby. Lasix will not help much with edema that is because of an inflammatory response such as a bacterial infection. It will however work for subcutaneous edema or fluid in the chest caused from heart failure or liver failure. I would advise against giving anything that was not directed or prescribed by your veterinarian. I would try and see your veterinarian as soon as he/she gets back into the office for an exam or you may also visit an emergency veterinarian for an exam. The swelling may be due to the infection or perhaps evidence of liver or heart disease. It is important to determine what the cause is so the proper treatment can be administered. Thanks for posting and best of luck to you and Scooby.
