Why is my cat suddenly scratching my child? How can I stop it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Persian | Female | spayed | 10 months and 12 days old | 6.83 lbs

Zoii plays with my 4 and half year old nephew. He is very gentle and loving and never hurts zoii. And even zoii used to play lightly without using nails. But for past few days she has started playing very roughly with him and has given scratches 3 times in a week. What can I do??

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would probably avoid continued contact if she does not appear to respond to your commands. The reason is that cat scratches can be quite dangerous to a child not just because of the physical trauma but because of the possible infections that can be transmitted that are usually more marked in children. Good luck and have a good night!
