Why can't my puppy jump even though he shows no signs of pain?

My puppy Xavier. Has never been able to jump. He isn't showing any signs of pain and seems and acts and looks perfectly fine. Why can't he jump?

It is possible that he either just doesn’t really know how to jump, or he may have discomfort if he tries. Problems such as hip dysplasia or luxating patellas can cause discomfort and cause a dog to resist jumping. It’s never wrong to have him except by your veterinarian to make sure nothing is physically wrong, Good luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.

Poor guy. It certainly sounds like it could be back pain. Sometimes gentle massage can feel good, but he may be too painful for that. It sounds like he really should see a veterinarian to help define his problems and prescribe some dog safe pain medication for him. Best of luck and I hope he improves quickly.

Hi there. When a dog abruptly stops wanting to jump up on furniture, do stairs, etc., the most common cause would be back pain or some other type of orthopedic problem - even if she isn't yelping or whining, or showing any other obvious signs of pain. I would recommend taking her to the vet tomorrow for an exam. He/she can do a thorough orthopedic exam to check for problems, and may recommend x-rays if needed to help determine what's wrong.

My dog can't jump up on my bed without help all of a sudden. If she does, she winces. She is not limping or have any other symptoms except her back legs get quivery & she catch scratch behind her ear with either leg.
It sounds like your dog has a problem with her back as that is a common sign of back pain. Dogs are usually reluctant to jump because it causes pain. Your vet can check her for back pain and then prescribe medications to help. She may need an anti-inflammatory, muscle relaxer, and/or pain medications to help. Also, it would be a good idea to restrict her activity for a few weeks, no running, jumping, etc. Hope she feels better soon!

To me this sounds like Echo is likely in some degree of pain. A change in activity is often a sign of pain. Most dogs don't actively whine or complain when they are uncomfortable or painful. If back or neck pain is present a dog won't always limp. Please remember there are no safe over the counter pain medications for dogs so you will need to have medication prescribed by a veterinarian. I'm interpreting your question to mean Toby is having *problems* jumping...? This could be a sign of pain with an orthopedic issue, such as luxating patellas (kneecaps that shift out of their correct place) or intervertebral disc disease. It could also be a sign of lethargy if Toby is showing any other symptoms of illness such as a decreased appetite, vomiting, or diarrhea. If this is a sudden change but Toby is acting completely normal otherwise, you may rest him for several days in case it's a minor injury - don't allow him to jump on/off furniture, carry him outside to urinate then right back inside, no rough play, etc. However, if it doesn't improve with a few days of rest, or if he's having any other symptoms, Toby should be seen by a vet to determine the problem and get him started on the appropriate treatment. Do not give him any medications without your vet's instructions, as no human pain medication is safe & effective for dogs, and anything you give could interfere with

Chihuahuas are prone to having luxating patellas which can cause pain when jumping. This can be a genetic problem and if it gets worse then he may need surgery to keep them in place. I recommend limiting the jumping by using pet stairs to the furniture, and keeping him on the thin side to protect his legs from carrying excess weight. As long as he’s not lame and not painful if you prevent him from jumping, then you can wait to have him examined. My jack russell terrier has been having trouble with his left leg it's been giving out on him. He can't jump up on sofa and has been yelping if you even pat his back around the top of his left leg area.
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Lameness can be an indication of an orthopedic condition. This can be due to conditions such as a soft tissue injury, ligament conditions, a fracture and even a tumor. For this reason, I recommend that you have Jo evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. A veterinarian should be able to perform an examination and localize where the pain is so that further diagnostics like radiographs can be performed. Treatment will be highly dependent on what is causing the lameness. At the very least your veterinarian can start Jo on pain control medications to provide comfort. In the meantime, keep Jo's activity level to a minimum avoiding any jumping, running or rough playing. I hope you find this information useful in helping Jo. Wishing Jo a speedy recovery!

I have a Boston terrier mix female. She has started refusing to jump up into our lap or on the couch. What concerns medically should I have? She will however jump down with no problems nor does she whine like she hurts.
Poor Gigi! In many cases, reluctance to jump up onto furniture or onto an owner's lap is a sign of back pain, or arthritis in the hips or rear legs. This can be true even if she isn't crying or whining, as many dogs who are painful don't make any obvious sounds like this. I would recommend taking Gigi to the vet for an exam when you are able to - he/she can do a thorough orthopedic exam and may also recommend x-rays to help check for problems in her back or hips. If a problem is found, your vet can prescribe an anti-inflammatory or pain medication to help make her more comfortable so that she can get back to jumping on things the way she did before :)

I am very sorry to hear that Jake seems less eager to jump then he used to be. This is a very common problem with older small- medium dogs. Though it is difficulty to say exactly what is the cause, I would be worried about osteoarthritis in Jake's hip joints. A vet would be able to diagnose with a physical examination as well as potentially using an X-ray to visualise the changes in Jake's lower back, Such as slipped discs, knees, and hip joints. Because Jake seems otherwise very well in himself I would advise adding a supplement to his diet to help with joint health. There are several of these on the market currently. Look for Glucosamine & Chondroitin in the labels, and always buy a pet formulated brand, as doses are different for humans. I would also advise a change in his exercise regime to promote lean muscle mass development. Muscle wastage is a common contributing factor in older dogs. Poor Chloe! It sounds like she may be painful somewhere. I often see dogs with back or neck pain that act this way, because doing stairs or jumping is painful for them. It's also possible that she may have injured herself somehow, or has some type of orthopedic problem that makes these activities uncomfortable. I would recommend taking her to the vet for an exam. He/she may be able to determine what the problem is by palpating her neck, back, and legs, and may also recommend x-rays or other testing if needed to help diagnose the problem.
