My 7-week-old kittens have diarrhea but seem fine. What to do?

8 7 week old kittens 3 with diarrhea but play and eat just fine only thing is sore butts and poop everywhere and when pass gas very wet. I cannot afford to take them to vet I only have 1 cat and 4 dogs but now there are about 27 cats outside because I couldn’t let them starve. Now trying to make these little things adoptable, what can I do?

Intestinal worms are very common in young kittens and that could be the cause of the diarrhea. I would deworm all of the kittens, as they can pass the worms to each other. You may also want to contact your local SPCA for help with all of these cats and kittens. They can come and get them, get them any medication attention they need, and can find homes for them. I would deworm them with Panacur. Intestinal worms are very common in kittens, causing diarrhea. You can get Panacur from your vets office. It’s a three day course of treatment that you will need to give again two weeks after the first ends. This kills all the worms. They should then be dewormed every two weeks until they are three months old, then monthly until six months of age, after which they should be dewormed every three months. If the Panacur doesn’t help with the diarrhea, I would take them into the vet for a health check. As a side note, they are now old enough for a kitten formulated food. I would start weaning them onto one. I hope this helps!

The most common reason for diarrhea in kittens is worms. I suspect the vet will give them a general dewormer at their exam. I suggest you stop any milk replacer or milk products if you are using them as they can also cause diarrhea. At 5 weeks they can eat solid foods and don't need milk. I have 2 litters of kittens the first litter got diarrhea and now the second litter has gotten it. They are all still nursing and I have tries to be careful about cross contamination they are in separate locations I am really starting to worry about
The most likely cause of the diarrhea you are seeing is gastrointestinal parasites. At 6 weeks, you should definitely start deworming the kitties. While I understand your financial constraints, I would see if you could simply bring in a fecal sample to the vet to be tested for parasites. This way, in a couple weeks, you have it retested and see if another deworming is necessary. In regards to cross-contamination, the best thing you can do is wear gloves between litters and wash your hands and arms thoroughly between sessions. If you touch them to your clothing, change clothes as well, reserving certain outfits for time spent with certain litters. Lastly, kittens should be starting the weaning process at about four weeks. While nursing at six weeks isn't unheard of, I would definitely try to start encouraging the feeding or regular food as soon as possible. Hope this helps!

The most likely scenario is that she has intestinal parasites/worms. Very common in kittens even if they have already had a dose of deworming. I do not think it’s from the food. I suggest you get both kittens to your veterinarian for a exam and a fecal test.

If they all have it, it could be due to something like intestinal worms. It's concerning this diarrhea won't go away, and they can easily become dehydrated from it. I'd take them into the vet first thing in the morning to get the cause of the diarrhea diagnosed so they can be treated. I hope this helps!

Hello. The very first thing is to make sure all the kitties are free of intestinal parasites. The best thing is to take a mixed stool sample into your veterinarian. You could just worm everyone with an over the counter general wormer such as pyrantel pamoate, but there are quite a few parasites that might be missed. Once everyone is clear of any intestinal parasites, & the diarrhea persists, then you could try a product called Proviable KP. This is excellent for most common forms of diarrhea in pets & is easily purchased at most larger pet retailers, like Petco. But do make sure everyone is parasite free first. Sounds like you're taking great care of these kittens! Kittens can be quite susceptible to diarrhea, and can dehydrate quickly, so it's good to watch them closely and respond quickly. As long as the kittens are feeling fine, eating, playful, etc you can simply monitor for today - since they're relatively new to eating "real" food I wouldn't change anything there - but if the diarrhea continues tomorrow I would take them in to the vet. By 4 weeks of age they should be getting dewormed as well; even though you aren't seeing worms, they likely have them (if they haven't been dewormed yet) and are passing microscopic eggs. That can be a contributing factor to diarrhea. Your vet can help determine the source of the diarrhea, and can give fluids under the skin if need be, as well as probiotics and medications to firm the stool. You can also discontinue the KMR as soon as the kittens are reliably eating kitten food. If they struggle with the kibbles you can crunch them up even smaller.

Kittens that are this young and small can get worse quickly. They can get dehydrated and weak. They should be seen by a veterinarian for an exam and a fecal test. It sounds like they have an upper respiratory infection, eye infection and the diarrhea may be caused by intestinal parasites or coccidia. They should be examined as soon as possible before they get worse.

I am sorry to hear about your kitten! Unfortunately, GI parasites (such as roundworms, hookworms, giardia, and coccidia) are very common in kittens as a cause of diarrhea. Some of these can be treated with over the counter dewormer such as pyrantel (round and hook worms) but the others require prescription medication for treatment. It can also be difficult to dose the over the counter medication in a tiny kitten. I would recommend an examination by your veterinarian (Bring a stool sample with you) so they can check for these parasites. In the meantime, you can try picking up a probiotic from your vet or the pet store which will often help decrease the severity of diarrhea. Fortiflora by purina is the one we use most commonly (you can get that brand at your vet's office or online).

At the age of 6-7 weeks, these kittens are completely capable of eating dry kitten food. Perhaps this would help to regulate the stools and firm them up. You can do a combination of soft kitten food and the dry kibble.
