My chihuahua is aggressive when leaving his crate. How can I calm him?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 10 months old

I have a male chihuahua, every night he goes to sleep in a cage and in the morning we take him out, for the past 2 weeks has become very aggressive when coming out to go outside, he will either refuse to go outside even when giving him treats and if you try and close the cage or touch the cage or get near the cage we growl and become very aggressive i have become scared of him and don’t know what to do to calm him down.

Hello, & thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. The first thing you might want to consider is to neuter Panchito. He may be exerting some significant dominance over you. He should, at least, get a good physical examination to make sure there are no underlying medical issues for his behavior. If all checks out OK, then you may need to seek out the advice of a behavior specialist to sort out what Panchito's issues are, whether this is fear driven, some type of sensory overload, or other possible neurological condition. I would start him immediately on a natural calming product called Zylkene. It is available online or possibly at the better pet stores. Consider plugging an Adaptil diffuser in the room with his cage. This emits a odorless pheromone that also can calm a dog.& make sure when all is calm when you are around him. Good luck with your little guy. Take care.
