Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | unspayed | 5 months and 6 days old | 11 lbs
Hi, Lilly (4 months shihtzu) is always too excited when someone walks through the front door. She jumps and spins around guests in an uncontrollable manner. I try to grab her but some times she bites me so I can let go of her. It is embarrassing to me as not all people like this dog behaviour and some of them freak out. I also worry that she would hurt herself. What do you advise me to do to calm her down?

I recommend having Lilly in the crate when people come over. When they are inside and settled then let her out of the crate to greet them. They should not focus on her just continue socially with you. If she's calm they can pat her but I wouldn't do anything to get her excited. Over time she'll learn that when she's under control she can be with visitors. If she gets too excited then I would put her outside or back into the crate, This is not punishment per se but rather a time out until she can control her behavior. Training her will take time and patience but it will be worth the effort when you have a well behaved companion. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Lilly.

I would keep a leash on her when guests come over to be able to better handle her. I have also trained my dog to go to his “place” when I give the command. That can be a rug or a kennel- something with a physical boundary. It takes time and reputation, but you can train her to go to her place. This eliminates the craziness with the guests as she is not allowed off the “place”. Good luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.
