My dog had teeth removed. Can I add too much water to kibble?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund miniature | Female | spayed | 8.5 lbs

My little rescue had all her teeth removed, I tried feeding canned food, but she only wants her kibble. I decided to mash it with water and she loves it. I just want to make sure I can't give her too much water this way. She eats 1/4 cup of food softened with about the same amount of water 3 times a day. I had a friends dog die from water toxicity and now I'm paranoid.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I’m glad to hear that Luna is eating so well despite having her teeth extracted. Depending on how long ago the procedure was, dogs can sometimes eat kibble still (typically at least three weeks after the procedure). If she does need it to be softened, equal amounts of water to food is perfectly safe for her.
