Why is my cat losing weight, has greasy fur, and heavy breathing?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | 5 years and 4 months old

My cat is 5 years old and has gradually lost weight, fur is full greasy and clumpy and her breathing is heavy. We noticed the heavy breathing about 2 years ago but she seemed fine. About 2 weeks ago I bought Special Kitty brand food (Walmart's brand) and both of my cats were barely eating it. 1 week ago we bought their normal food and they had no problem going back to it. I haven't really noticed any other changes in her. We plan to het her to the vet in February or sooner if we have the money.

I would recommend getting her in sooner than February. Weight loss usually means something more than just not liking a new food, such as intestinal parasites, endocrine disorder (such as hyperthyroidism), kidney disease, etc. The greasy coat could be from the lack of grooming (either because she doesn't feel well or it is too painful to do so - oral pain or arthritis), but could also be cause by hyperthyroidism.
