My dog limps, has a swollen lump. Is it infection or spinal hernia?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Silky Terrier | Male | unneutered | 9 years and 6 months old | 12 lbs

Between Fri-Sat., my 9 years old silky terrier started limping, yelping, contorting in pain, and his neck became bent towards the left. Upon checking, I found a swollen painful soft lump near his right axillary lymph. I gave him sea buckthorn oil to reduce inflammation, which had good effect. However, several hours later, episode repeated. Took him to the vet, who ran his fingers along spine, concluding a likely spinal hernia. Could symptoms be just of infection to treat with antibiotics? Thanks

If he has swollen lymph nodes then he could have an infection or possibly lymphoma. Your vet can run blood-work and aspirate the lymph node to determine why it is enlarged. If he has an infection than he would need an antibiotic to treat. If he has a problem with a disc in his back then he would also need an anti-inflammatory and pain medications.
