Why is my dog's dry, peeling nose now red, irritated, and bleeding?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature American Shepherd | Male | neutered | 6 years and 6 months old

Hello, my names Gabrielle and my dogs (Miniature Australian shepherd) nose was dry and peeling/cracked yesterday night. We put Neosporin on it over night and when we woke up it shed the dry skin flakes off but its now all red, irritated, and was bleeding in a small spot a couple minutes ago. Any possible reasons why this would be happening?

Several problems can cause irritated nasal planum. However, especially in herding breeds other immune disorders such as discoid lupus, pemphigus, or zinc deficiency can also cause these signs. I typically treat with oral antibiotics for 3 weeks and if it’s not resolving then I biopsy the nose for a diagnosis. Good luck and I hope it heals soon!
