Why did my senior dog's black, oily skin clear after a baby oil wash?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | neutered | 12 years and 6 months old | 16 lbs

Hello I just washed my oily smelly dog in johnstons baby oil wash for the first time and and the water was full of black dead skin flakes. He has sebaceous cysts and warts. We have tried so many shampoos and nothing like this ha ever happened. His coat is so white again and there's now patches of pink skin again. His skin has turned black over the years he is 12.5 years old. Any thoughts?

So several problems can cause darkening of the skin. Chronic yeast infections and seborrhea oleosa are probably the 2 most common problems. They are both treated very differently. I would recommend a visit with your veterinarian and see what their thoughts are. Good luck and I hope you find a good plan that improves his comfort level.
