My dog had bloody diarrhea, now better. Should I still see the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | neutered | 8 years and 1 month old | 5 lbs

My dog had blood in his diarrhea on Saturday, from then on I've been feeding him bland chicken and rice planning to take him to the vet on Monday. Now it is Monday and he does not have diarrhea anymore. He has been pooping regularly and does not have any blood in his poop. Should I still take him to the vet?

Glad to see that Ruby is feeling better. If he is acting fine clinically and the problematic stool has resolved, I think it is safe to monitor the situation rather than going to the vet. If the symptoms recur, you can always make another appointment. You can also see about just submitting a stool sample to your veterinarian to check for the presence of any parasites. Hope this makes sense.

Hello. If the diarrhea is improving & Babe is eating, drinking & acting well, then you can see how things go. If the diarrhea should suddenly worsen, or Babe acts ill in any way, do take him in to see your vet as soon as possible. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

If it was a one time thing you can just monitor him for now, if it happens again i would definitely recommend taking Janko to the vet in order to get it checked, he will probably need an antibiotic course to resolve the problem.
